Alicante's maritime economy has anchored the city since Phoenician traders established a port settlement in the eighth century BCE. The harbour basin — sheltered by the limestone promontory of Mount Benacantil — offered a natural anchorage that later served Roman galleys, Moorish merchants, and Aragonese fleets.
By the sixteenth century, Alicante ranked among the Mediterranean's busiest commercial harbours, exporting wine, esparto grass, and salt harvested from the inland lagoons.
Today, Puerto de Alicante accommodates a dual function: commercial terminals occupy the northern quays, while the southern marina hosts approximately 700 recreational berths ranging from eight-metre sloops to forty-metre motor yachts. The marina's breakwater, completed in 1992, extends 1,200 metres into Alicante Bay, creating a protected basin that remains navigable year-round. Charter operators launch from the marina's pontoons between 09:00 and 21:00 daily, offering crewed sailings, bareboat rentals for licensed skippers, and scheduled ferry services to Tabarca Island, a marine reserve eleven nautical miles southeast.
The Costa Blanca coastline presents a varied profile: vertical limestone cliffs alternate with pocket beaches of coarse sand and pebble. Prevailing easterly winds average twelve knots during summer months, producing moderate swells that favour catamaran hulls over monohull designs. Charter vessels range from traditional lateen-rigged llaüts — wooden fishing boats adapted for tourism — to contemporary catamarans equipped with snorkelling platforms and stabilised sun decks. Most operators include onboard amenities such as cooled storage for provisions, swim ladders, and retractable bimini tops. Departures align with tidal windows and wind forecasts issued by Puertos del Estado, Spain's national port authority, ensuring optimal conditions for recreational navigation.
